Look up 1.9 PD EGR valve/manifold cleaning on You Tube and marvel at the soot build up in some engines. I had a new EGR valve fitted to my old Audi 80 Tdi, but the old one was completely blocked up and soot was set hard like coal. I'm not sure how much a garage would charge to do it as it is a messy job and wouldn't be on their favourites list!
Yank the EGR valve. Yank and then clean out the intake manifold, reassemble with new gasket and unrounded allen bolts. Cut off and plug the vacuum line to N18. Attach the race pipe in place of the EGR valve. Attach the block off plate on the exhaust manifold. Replumb the coolant lines for the EGR cooler delete with the new 2 hoses and coupler

Driving a diesel slowly, or on light throttle settings at low revs, never giving it a good thrashing (which they all need and you won't hurt it!) does also bugger up the egr. Also, supermarket diesel does contribute to more carbon build up it's reckoned.

Jan 4, 2010. #9. But if you want to check and clean it, just remove 3 forward facing allen head bolts around the EGR, and pull it out towards the front of the car. Then vacuum any chunks that fell off so they do not get pulled into the cylinders when you start it. Then clean the EGR.
